One billion trees in 24 hours: Truphena Muthoni and Mbavu Destroyer unveil Earth Day 2027 world record bid
Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni, the Guinness World Records holder known to fans as "Treephena", has announced a bid to plant one billion trees in Kenya within 24 hours. She has been joined by popular content creator and amateur boxer Mbavu Destroyer and an Australian tree-planting enthusiast.
The trio unveiled the plan in a video shared on Muthoni's Facebook page on Sunday, 1 November. K24 Digital and The Kenya Times report that the attempt is set for 22 April 2027, World Earth Day, and that it is meant to coincide with the launch of a countrywide tree-planting day. Mpasho named the Australian partner as Jimi Cohen.
"We will plant the most trees ever planted by humanity, one billion trees in just 24 hours in Kenya," Muthoni said in the clip.
An unlikely partnership
In the video, Mbavu Destroyer, whose real name is Ferdinand Omondi, brought his trademark energy, introducing himself with his familiar "Eastside" chant before presenting his new Australian friend. The Australian guest said he planned "to plant more trees in a day than any human has ever planted."
Mbavu, a former security guard, became famous on TikTok for clips of himself lifting heavy concrete blocks and stones. He has since moved into exhibition boxing. In April this year he lost a celebrity bout to content creator Majembe by technical knockout in the fourth round at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.
Pairing a viral entertainer with a climate campaigner is likely to bring the green message to a younger audience that follows Mbavu online.
Treephena's growing list of records
Muthoni rose to fame in 2025 with a 48-hour tree hug at Nairobi's Michuki Memorial Park. She went further in December 2025 with a 72-hour hug of an indigenous tree in Nyeri County, which Guinness World Records recognised in January 2026 as the longest marathon tree hug.
- She was appointed an ambassador for the national tree-growing campaign, which aims to grow 15 billion trees by 2032, and received a Head of State Commendation.
- Earlier this year she announced a plan to plant 150,000 mangrove seedlings in one hour in Kwale County.
- In March she announced an attempt in Brazil to hug 1,172 trees in one hour.
Big numbers, big questions
One billion trees in a single day would be a huge undertaking. It would mean millions of volunteers, nurseries producing seedlings on a vast scale and careful choice of planting sites. So far, the organisers have not said how seedlings will be sourced, which partners are on board or whether the attempt has been registered with Guinness World Records.
The announcement nonetheless trended on social media on Monday, with many Kenyans pledging to take part and others asking how such a target could be reached.
