Six Dead, Several Injured In Horrific Matatu-Truck Collision Along Eldoret-Nakuru Highway
At least six people have reportedly lost their lives following a horrific road accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a truck at Kondoo area along the busy Eldoret-Nakuru Highway.
The fatal accident, which occurred early Friday morning, left several other passengers with serious injuries after the two vehicles reportedly collided head-on.
According to preliminary reports, the matatu was travelling towards Nakuru when it collided with an oncoming truck, causing extensive damage to the public service vehicle.
Witnesses at the scene described a terrifying moment, saying the impact was so severe that the matatu was left badly wrecked, trapping some passengers inside.
"We heard a loud bang and rushed to the scene. The matatu was completely wrecked," one eyewitness recounted.
Emergency responders, including police officers and Kenya Red Cross personnel, rushed to the scene to assist in rescue operations and evacuate the injured.
The injured passengers were reportedly taken to nearby health facilities in Molo and Nakuru Level 5 Hospital for emergency medical attention. Some were said to be in critical condition.
The accident also caused a major traffic snarl-up along the highway as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
Preliminary eyewitness accounts suggest that dangerous overtaking may have contributed to the crash, although the exact circumstances remain subject to police investigations.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Kenya, particularly as the country continues to experience rainfall in several regions, raising the risk of slippery roads and reduced visibility.
Motorists have been urged to observe traffic regulations, avoid speeding and exercise extra caution when overtaking, especially on busy highways.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were reportedly moved to the mortuary as authorities began efforts to establish their identities and notify their families.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
