Gor Mahia's week has started with two pieces of unwelcome news: striker Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw has gone under the knife and will not play again this year, and the club's next home match has been pushed out of Nairobi altogether.

The record champions confirmed on Tuesday that the Ghanaian forward had surgery in Nairobi on Sunday, 1 November, for an injury he picked up at the CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali in August. Team doctor Brian Odongo said the procedure went well and the player is recovering, but added that he "is expected to be out of football for approximately three months".

Out since August

Adu-Kwaw, in his second season at K'Ogalo, last featured in the Kagame Cup final against Rayon Sports, where he started before being replaced by Bryton Onyona. He has not played in any of Gor Mahia's five FKF Premier League matches this season, and the club has not disclosed the exact nature of the injury.

A three-month lay-off points to a return in February 2027, meaning he will miss the rest of the first half of the league campaign, including the festive-season fixtures when Gor traditionally pile up points.

The timing is awkward for coach and squad alike. Gor Mahia suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday, going down 2-1 to ten-man KCB in Embu, although they remain top of the table on 12 points. The attack has leaned heavily on Onyona and the midfield runners in Adu-Kwaw's absence.

Nyayo booked, Gor head to Mwea

Separately, the club announced that its sixth-round home fixture against newly promoted Nairobi United on Sunday, 8 November, will be played at Wang'uru Stadium in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, rather than at Nyayo National Stadium.

Nyayo has been reserved for a religious crusade that weekend, with the event already advertised on a billboard at the Nyayo roundabout. The stadium had only recently reopened after about two weeks of closure for pitch rehabilitation ahead of Harambee Stars' AFCON qualifier against South Africa on 17 November.

Gor Mahia have used Wang'uru before and the ground has become a familiar second home for Nairobi clubs when the capital's main venues are unavailable. Early-bird tickets for the Nairobi United game are on sale at Sh200 until Wednesday, 4 November, after which the standard price of Sh300 applies.

Round six at a glance

  • Gor Mahia v Nairobi United, Wang'uru Stadium, Mwea, Sunday 8 November.
  • 3K FC v AFC Leopards, Embu, Saturday 7 November.
  • Gor Mahia remain top on 12 points after five matches despite the loss to KCB.

The venue shuffle also underlines the squeeze on Nairobi's stadiums as the government prioritises national-team preparations, with Kasarani and the new Talanta Stadium being readied for AFCON 2027 and Nyayo increasingly booked for non-football events.
