'Kalonzo was never born to be a running mate': Wiper Coast leaders threaten to quit united opposition unless he is named flagbearer
Grassroots leaders of the Wiper Patriotic Front from the Coast have handed the united opposition a blunt warning: name Kalonzo Musyoka as the 2027 presidential flagbearer or watch the party walk him to the ballot alone. Speaking at a press briefing in Mombasa, the leaders said the former vice president would not accept a running-mate slot in any opposition formation and rubbished talk that he could end up deputising President William Ruto.
The ultimatum lands at a delicate moment for the opposition, which has promised to settle on a single candidate within weeks while its principals, Mr Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Jubilee leader Fred Matiang'i, openly jostle for the ticket.
'Never born to be a running mate'
Wiper Coast chairman John Chamia dismissed suggestions that Mr Musyoka could be courted into the Ruto camp. "Whoever said Kalonzo will deputise Mr Ruto is dreaming. We can never even engage with him because Ruto and Kalonzo can never be together," he said, according to the Nation.
The leaders argued that Mr Musyoka had twice stood aside for the late Raila Odinga and that it was time other opposition leaders returned the favour. "Kalonzo was never born to be a running mate in every election. He supported the late Raila Odinga, and now it is time they support him," one of them said.
National Executive Committee member Omar Twaha said the Wiper leader was being treated unfairly despite his long role in holding the opposition together, pointing out that he had turned down a Cabinet offer from the government to stay in the trenches. He was, however, careful to stress that the party does not want to split the coalition. "If we front Kalonzo as the party, we would disintegrate the opposition, and that is not our intention. Our goal is one, to remove President William Ruto from power, and so we must respect each other," he said.
Heckling at Sifuna's launch still rankles
The Coast leaders also revisited the heckling of Mr Musyoka during the launch of Mr Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi Movement in Nairobi on October 30, an incident that has strained relations between the two camps. Mr Chamia said the party believed outsiders had been planted in the crowd to stir discord, and he absolved Mr Sifuna of personal blame, though other speakers directed pointed remarks at the senator's supporters and demanded discipline within the alliance.
The leaders further claimed government operatives were working to exploit the opposition's internal differences, and asked coalition partners to coordinate their messaging and guarantee the safety of leaders at public events.
Pressure from the Sifuna wing
The demand is a direct response to a growing push for Mr Musyoka to shelve his ambitions. Democracy for the Citizens Party deputy leader Cleophas Malala has urged him to adopt what he called the "Obama and Biden formula", backing 45-year-old Mr Sifuna as the candidate and settling for an older running mate drawn from the opposition ranks.
Mr Musyoka said at the Linda Mwananchi launch that the united opposition would likely name its flagbearer on November 13, while Mr Chamia put the horizon at roughly a month. Mr Gachagua, for his part, has argued that unveiling a candidate with more than 280 days to the election would expose the opposition's cards to State House.
The Wiper leader has also been under pressure from his own Ukambani backyard, where he last week accused allies of allowing President Ruto to make inroads. With the Coast wing now drawing a line in the sand, the flagbearer talks have become the opposition's toughest test yet.
