More than three months after Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso was shot dead on a Nairobi street, a serving police inspector has been charged with her murder.

Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang appeared before Justice Alexander Muteti at the Milimani High Court and pleaded not guilty. He was remanded at Industrial Area Remand Prison after the prosecution said it would oppose his release on bail.

What the charge sheet says

According to the charge, Dr Mutiso was shot at about 9.30am on July 29, 2026, along Mawensi Road in Kilimani, Nairobi. The prosecution alleges that Sang, acting jointly with others not yet before court, caused her death. He faces a murder charge under Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.

Early police statements in July placed the shooting in Upper Hill, the neighbourhood next to Kilimani. At the time, the DCI said preliminary findings showed the doctor had requested an Uber ride when she was shot, and homicide detectives from its headquarters took over the case. The agency also urged the public to avoid speculation that could interfere with the investigation.

Bail fight ahead

The prosecution team, led by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Victor Owiti, told the court the Director of Public Prosecutions would oppose bail and would file an affidavit setting out its reasons. A probation officer was given 21 days to prepare a report, and the case will be mentioned on November 30, 2026.

Six now facing charges

Sang, who was arrested in Eldoret, is the latest person to be charged over the killing. He joins five others already facing charges:

  • Rose Mbithe Mulwa
  • Her children Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa
  • Police Constable Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot
  • Police Constable Kennedy Kipkemoi Borboroi

All the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Nairobi News reported that detectives are still pursuing other leads as they try to piece together the circumstances of the doctor's death.

The case has drawn wide attention because of the alleged involvement of serving officers in a targeted killing in one of Nairobi's busiest neighbourhoods. Sang's bail application will be heard after the prosecution files its affidavit.
