Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice-President McDonald Mariga and six other National Executive Committee (NEC) members have been expelled following a Special General Meeting held in Meru on Saturday.

The decision followed deliberations by the federation's General Assembly over alleged violations of the FKF Constitution and applicable FIFA regulations.

Those expelled alongside Mariga are Central NEC representative Robert Kenneth Macharia, Upper Rift Valley representative Bernard Korir Lagat, Women Representative Violet Kerubo Momanyi, Nyanza representative Collins Opiyo Kalee, Coast representative Gabriel Mghendi and Nairobi representative Daniel Akala Shikanda.

According to FKF, the officials were accused of repeatedly missing duly convened NEC meetings, making unauthorised communications on behalf of the federation and participating in a disputed April 24, 2026, resolution seeking the removal of FKF President Hussein Mohammed.

The meeting, however, was characterised by tension, heavy police deployment and reports of teargas being used at Three Steers Hotel, where delegates had gathered.

Mariga arrived at the venue under police escort, while some delegates reportedly experienced difficulties accessing the meeting.

Following the announcement, the seven officials rejected their removal, arguing that they had been locked out of the meeting and denied an opportunity to defend themselves against the allegations.

They indicated that they would challenge the process using the FKF Constitution.

Representatives from FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the government attended the meeting as observers.

The latest developments mark another chapter in the leadership disputes within Kenyan football, raising questions about governance and stability as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
