Sifuna Ouster Sparks Storm as Linda Mwananchi Alleges State House Plot
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's removal as Senate Deputy Minority Whip has triggered a fresh political storm, with leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement claiming the decision was orchestrated at State House before being implemented within the Senate.
The controversy erupted on July 16 after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi formally announced Sifuna's removal and the appointment of Migori Senator Eddy Oketch as the new Deputy Minority Whip. The change followed a communication from Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo and took effect immediately.
However, a section of opposition senators has strongly opposed the move, alleging that it was politically motivated and aimed at silencing one of the government's most vocal critics. The lawmakers claimed the decision was agreed upon during a meeting between President William Ruto and some ODM leaders before being ratified through a parliamentary group meeting.
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, speaking on behalf of the group, argued that Sifuna was being punished for maintaining a firm opposition stance. Other leaders, including Agnes Kavindu, Okiya Omtatah, and Richard Onyonka, questioned the manner in which the leadership changes were effected, warning that the independence of Parliament was under threat.
The senators further accused ODM leaders serving in the broad-based government arrangement of undermining the opposition's oversight role. They vowed to challenge the changes through legal and political channels, insisting that the Senate minority leadership must remain independent of the Executive.
Despite the uproar, Sifuna struck a conciliatory tone, thanking Senate leadership and colleagues for their support during his tenure and congratulating Eddy Oketch on his new role.
The latest setback for the Nairobi Senator comes barely a week after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties recognized his removal as ODM Secretary-General, further deepening political divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement.
As the battle shifts to the courts and the political arena, the fallout from Sifuna's ouster is expected to shape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
