Kompany leaves hospital after collapse as Bayern hammer Magdeburg 6-1 in Kane's Ballon d'Or celebration
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital, almost a week after he collapsed while watching the club's second team train, the German champions have confirmed.
Max Eberl, Bayern's board member for sport, broke the news to German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday before the club's German Cup second-round tie against Magdeburg, which Bayern went on to win 6-1 at the Allianz Arena.
"Given the circumstances, he's doing well," Eberl said. "He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."
What happened to Kompany
The 40-year-old Belgian was rushed to hospital last Friday after falling ill at the training ground. Eberl said doctors had traced the incident to meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord.
Kompany had been fighting a virus in the days before the collapse and had missed some training sessions. He also skipped a pre-match news conference before Bayern's Champions League game against Arsenal, although he was on the touchline for the match itself.
Eberl said the coach would now rest and take medication, and would only resume work once doctors clear him. Bayern had earlier said his absence would be a matter of "weeks, not days". "I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 percent," Eberl added.
English assistant Aaron Danks has taken charge in the meantime and has now overseen two wins, a 3-1 Bundesliga victory at Freiburg on Sunday and Wednesday's cup rout.
Kane rested on his big night
The Magdeburg game doubled as a celebration for Harry Kane, who on Monday became the first English winner of the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001 and the first Bayern player to take the award in 45 years. Kane received a guard of honour from his teammates and waved to the crowd, but stayed on the bench for the whole match as the club managed his workload.
Without him, Bayern still had too much for the second-tier side:
- Michael Olise scored twice, either side of a goal from Ismael Saibari.
- Magdeburg briefly drew level in the first half and hit the post just before the break.
- Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown struck within three minutes of each other in the second half.
- Teenager David Santos Daiber added the sixth in stoppage time.
Busy run ahead, and a date in Nairobi
Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga, host Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Saturday with the two sides level on points, before travelling to Spain to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League next week.
Kenyan fans have an extra reason to follow Kompany's recovery. President William Ruto announced on Wednesday that Bayern and Dutch giants Ajax will play a friendly on January 5, 2027 to officially open the Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi.
