KCB thrash Quins 47-7 for record 11th Impala Floodlit title as Mwamba Ladies make it five in a row
KCB Rugby are back on top of the Impala Floodlit tournament after demolishing Kenya Harlequins 47-7 in Saturday night's final at Impala Club, Nairobi, to lift a record 11th title and end a two-year wait for the trophy.
On the same night, Mwamba Ladies extended their grip on the women's competition, coming from behind to beat Quins Queens 20-8 for a fifth consecutive Floodlit crown.
Bankers run riot
KCB were in control from the first whistle. Branton Lusisa crossed for the opening try and Sheldon Kahi added a second, with Brian Wahinya converting both. Harlequins, playing in their first Floodlit final since 2014, hit back with a converted try to make it 14-7, but that was as close as they got.
Charles Osgood and Randy Wamah scored before the break, Wahinya again adding the extras, to send KCB into half-time 28-7 up. Vincent Onyala scored after the restart and the Bankers added two more tries, with Stephen Osumba taking over the kicking duties, to close out a 40-point win.
"This victory is a reflection of the hard work, commitment and belief within this squad," head coach Andrew Amonde said. Captain Winston Macharia said the players understood the title's importance. "We wanted this title, and everyone in the squad understood what it meant to the club and our supporters," he said.
Mwamba's fightback
The women's final was far tighter. Quins Queens raced into an 8-0 lead through a Mary Chitechi penalty and a Deleon Indombo try, and Mwamba trailed at the break.
The champions responded in the second half. Edith Nariaka's try levelled matters at 8-8 before Irine Opiyo scored twice to put the result beyond doubt. Diana Omosso contributed a penalty and a conversion.
Mwamba coach Paul Murunga congratulated his players "for the job well done" and said the win gives the team confidence and momentum ahead of the new season.
Kenya Cup next
Both champions now turn to the 2026/27 season. The men's Kenya Cup kicks off on November 21, with KCB opening their campaign away to defending champions Kabras Sugar at the ASK Showground in Kakamega, in what promises to be an early statement fixture.
