Anger in Ruto backyard as youths torch UDA campaign materials in Murang’a
Tension erupted in Murang’a after a section of angry youths reportedly burned UDA campaign materials shortly after President William Ruto toured the county, in a dramatic show of defiance that has sparked political debate. Videos circulating online showed youths setting fire to UDA-branded T-shirts and caps while chanting anti-government slogans, including “Wantam,” in scenes that have since gone viral.
The incident unfolded during a visit meant to consolidate support in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region, where the President launched and inspected development projects while rallying support for his re-election agenda. But the burning of campaign materials appeared to expose simmering frustration among some youth, turning what was meant to be a political show of strength into a moment of embarrassment for the ruling party.
The symbolic act has already fueled fresh questions over the President’s grip on his traditional support base, with critics interpreting it as a warning sign from restless young voters battling economic hardship and political discontent.
Supporters of the President, however, dismissed the incident as isolated provocation, insisting the Murang’a tour was largely successful and well attended.
With the 2027 succession politics already taking shape, the images from Murang’a may carry deeper meaning: a public protest in a region long considered politically loyal.
From chants to flames, Murang’a may have sent a message Nairobi cannot ignore.
