JUBA, South Sudan — Authorities in South Sudan have confirmed a devastating aviation accident claiming the lives of all 14 people on board a domestic flight on Monday.

The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) reported that the light aircraft went down approximately 20 kilometers southwest of the capital, Juba. The flight had departed from Yei and was en route to Juba when the incident occurred.

Investigation Underway

Search and rescue teams reached the site shortly after the crash, but officials confirmed there were no survivors among the passengers and crew. While the cause of the crash remains unknown, the SSCAA has dispatched a team of investigators to the scene to recover the flight recorders and examine the wreckage.

"We have sent our technical team to the crash site to establish the cause of this unfortunate accident," the Aviation Authority stated in a brief press release on Monday afternoon.

Safety Concerns Resurface

This latest disaster is likely to renew scrutiny over South Sudan's domestic aviation sector. The country has seen several similar incidents over the last few years, often involving older aircraft or challenging weather conditions during the rainy season.

Yei, a key town in Central Equatoria State, relies heavily on light aircraft for transport due to the ongoing challenges with road infrastructure and security.
