Nation Shocked as Gospel Artiste Rachel Wandeto Succumbs to Horrific Petrol Attack in Mwiki
The Kenyan gospel music industry and the entire nation are mourning the tragic and brutal passing of rising musician Rachel Muthoni Wandeto. Rachel succumbed to severe, extensive burn injuries on Monday morning, May 18, 2026, while undergoing intensive treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Her death has sparked massive public outrage, putting a sharp spotlight on the dangerous rise of political intolerance and violence in the country.
The Fatal Ambush
The horrifying ordeal began on the night of Saturday, May 16, 2026. Rachel was heading home shortly after midnight when she was ambushed by three masked men along 11th Street, near Obama Road in the Mwiki area of Kasarani Sub-County, Nairobi.
According to police and grief-stricken family members, the attackers accosted the gospel singer and demanded money. Crucially, the assailants claimed that the money and benefits they were demanding were rewards she had allegedly received for her very public and open support of President William Ruto. Before fleeing into the dark, the three masked men doused Rachel with petrol and set her ablaze.
The Desperate Fight for Life
Rachel was initially rushed to Uzima Uhai Hospital in Kasarani before being transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital due to the extreme severity of her injuries. Medical officials confirmed that she sustained extensive burns covering approximately 70% to 75% of her body, affecting her arms, legs, torso, and face.
On Sunday evening, May 17, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, alongside Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and other senior security officials, visited her at KNH. CS Murkomen noted that despite her critical condition, the young singer displayed immense courage and resilience.
Tragically, her body could not fight off the severe trauma, and she lost the battle on the morning of May 18. Fellow gospel industry colleague Karangu Murraya broke the news to heartbroken fans online, revealing that she had peacefully rested after a desperate appeal for blood donations.
Alleged Political Motive: The "Ruto Tattoo"
Preliminary investigations and public statements strongly suggest the attack was fueled by extreme political hostility. Earlier this year, Rachel went viral across social media platforms after getting a tattoo of President William Ruto’s face on her chest, complete with the phrase "TUTAM" (Two Terms), expressing her explicit backing of the Head of State's 2027 re-election bid.
Prior to the physical attack, supporters noted that she had faced relentless online bullying and harassment for her political stance.
Family Breaks Silence, Demands Justice
Speaking from the family home in Kabumbu, Kirinyaga Central, Rachel’s family members described her as a peaceful, hardworking, and promising young woman who did not deserve such a painful, agonizing end.
"She was a hardworking person and did not deserve to die in such a painful manner. We as a family are in so much pain. The death of my daughter is unbearable and government agencies should act fast," cried her mother, Sarah Njeri.
Her uncle, Joseph Githinji, echoed the sentiments, appealing directly to the state to ensure the perpetrators face the full force of the law.
High-Profile Condemnations and DCI Takeover
The heinous crime has drawn strong condemnation from the highest levels of government and civil society:
- President William Ruto issued a powerful statement mourning the artiste and warning that violence threatens Kenya's democratic stability. He vowed that the criminals responsible would be held to account, "irrespective of their affiliation."
- Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen described the killing as a senseless act that should prick the conscience of anyone propagating the politics of hate, division, and intolerance. He warned political leaders against inflammatory rhetoric that could fuel such physical violence.
- The DCI Homicide Directorate has officially taken full charge of the case. In an official briefing, the DCI assured the public and the bereaved family that a thorough and impartial investigation is underway to track down the planners and executors of the crime.
The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) and Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Commissioner Hon. Jacqueline Ingutiah have also strongly condemned the assault, calling it a direct attack on democracy and human dignity.
Public Appeal for Information
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has urged anyone with any information that could lead to the arrest of the three masked assailants to report to the nearest police station or use the 24-hour toll-free hotline at 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.
