Police Recover 73 Suspected Stolen Phones in Bungoma Crackdown
Police in Bungoma County have arrested two suspects following a major operation that uncovered a suspected mobile phone theft and cybercrime syndicate in Kimilili Town. The operation led to the recovery of 73 mobile phones believed to have been stolen from members of the public.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the arrests came after weeks of investigations into a network allegedly involved in stealing, reprogramming, and illegally reselling mobile phones within Bungoma and surrounding areas. Detectives conducted a raid on a shop in Kimilili Town where the suspects were operating, recovering dozens of mobile devices alongside specialized equipment suspected to have been used to alter phone software.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects are part of a wider criminal syndicate that targets mobile phone users before tampering with stolen devices and reintroducing them into the market. Police believe the recovered equipment was used to “flash” phones, a process that can erase identifying information and make the gadgets difficult to trace.
Authorities have since launched a broader investigation to identify additional members of the network and establish the ownership of the recovered phones. The suspects remain in police custody pending arraignment in court as detectives pursue further leads.
The crackdown highlights growing concern over organized mobile phone theft and cyber-enabled crimes across the country. Security agencies have warned that such syndicates often exploit technology to bypass security features, exposing victims to financial losses and potential data breaches.
Police have urged Kenyans to exercise caution when purchasing second-hand phones and to verify proof of ownership before completing any transactions. Members of the public have also been encouraged to report suspicious activities to help security agencies dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.
The latest operation is being viewed as a significant step in the fight against technology-related crime and is expected to aid efforts to recover stolen property and bring those responsible to justice.
