Oga Obinna: From the Streets of Nairobi to Building a Digital Media Empire (Part 2)
Churchill Show: The Breakthrough That Changed Everything
After years of performing at comedy clubs and the Kenya National Theatre, Oga Obinna's persistence paid off when he earned an opportunity to perform on Churchill Show, Kenya's most popular stand-up comedy television programme created by comedian Daniel "Churchill" Ndambuki.
At the time, Churchill Show had become the country's biggest platform for upcoming comedians. Many of Kenya's leading entertainers, including Eric Omondi, Chipukeezy, Professor Hamo, Jemutai, and Sleepy David, had used the show as a stepping stone to national fame.
For Obinna, appearing on Churchill Show marked a turning point. His energetic performances, witty storytelling, and confident stage presence introduced him to millions of viewers across Kenya. His unique style, often incorporating a Nigerian-inspired accent, helped him stand out in a highly competitive comedy industry.
Although he had already built experience on smaller stages, Churchill Show gave him the national exposure needed to secure more opportunities in television, radio, corporate events, and brand partnerships.
Expanding His Television Career
Following his growing popularity, Obinna received opportunities to work in television.
Among his early television roles was co-hosting Breaktime Show on NTV alongside actress Nice Githinji. The programme focused on engaging high school students through entertainment, educational discussions, games, and talent showcases.
He later became one of the presenters on The Comedy Club on KTN, where he continued showcasing his comedy skills while interviewing guests and interacting with audiences.
These television appearances expanded his profile beyond stand-up comedy, establishing him as a versatile entertainer capable of hosting live shows, interviewing guests, and presenting entertainment programmes.
A Successful Radio Career
Having built a reputation in comedy and television, Obinna transitioned into radio.
His first major opportunity came at QFM, then owned by Nation Media Group. He later worked at Nation FM, where he co-hosted programmes including The Jam with Anto Neosoul and contributed to other popular shows.
Radio allowed Obinna to connect with audiences in a different way. His humour, storytelling ability, and lively personality made him popular among listeners.
Joining Kiss 100
One of the defining moments of Obinna's career came in 2022 when he joined Kiss 100, one of Kenya's leading radio stations under Radio Africa Group.
He was appointed co-host of the station's breakfast show alongside Kamene Goro, replacing the previous morning show lineup.
The programme quickly became one of Kenya's most talked-about breakfast shows, featuring celebrity interviews, trending discussions, relationship debates, and current affairs.
Obinna's chemistry with Kamene Goro attracted significant public attention, helping strengthen his position as one of Kenya's leading radio personalities.
However, after about a year at the station, Obinna exited Kiss 100 in 2023 to concentrate on his growing digital media business.
Betting on Digital Media
Leaving mainstream radio was a bold decision.
While many media personalities viewed television and radio as the pinnacle of success, Obinna believed the future lay in digital content creation.
He invested heavily in studio equipment, cameras, lighting, editing facilities, and production spaces before launching Obinna TV Studios.
The company was established to provide professional digital production services while producing original online programmes.
The move reflected a broader shift in Kenya's media landscape, where audiences were increasingly consuming content through YouTube and social media rather than traditional broadcasting.
The Rise of Obinna TV
Obinna's digital platforms grew rapidly, attracting millions of viewers.
Among his flagship productions are:
Obinna Show Live
This long-form interview programme features politicians, musicians, actors, entrepreneurs, influencers, comedians, and other public figures.
Unlike traditional television interviews, the show often runs for more than an hour, allowing guests to discuss their personal journeys, careers, controversies, and opinions in greater detail.
The programme has hosted prominent Kenyan personalities and has become one of the country's most recognizable online interview platforms.
Pop the Balloon
One of Obinna's biggest digital successes is Pop the Balloon, a relationship and dating show inspired by international speed-dating formats but adapted for Kenyan audiences.
Participants use balloons to indicate whether they are interested in potential partners, leading to humorous interactions, unexpected revelations, and lively discussions about relationships.
The programme has generated millions of views and extensive conversations on social media, helping expand Obinna's audience beyond Kenya.
Riba Show
Obinna also launched Riba Show, a satirical programme combining comedy with commentary on social, political, and entertainment issues.
The show demonstrates his ability to blend humour with discussions on topics affecting everyday Kenyans.
Interviewing Influential Personalities
As Obinna TV grew, the platform attracted high-profile guests from different sectors.
Over the years, Obinna has interviewed musicians, actors, comedians, politicians, entrepreneurs, social media influencers, and religious leaders, creating a platform for in-depth conversations that often trend online.
His interviewing style—characterized by humour, empathy, and candid questions—has become one of the defining features of his brand.
Building a Business Beyond Entertainment
Beyond creating content, Obinna expanded into entrepreneurship.
Through Obinna TV Studios, he offers:
- Podcast production
- Studio rental services
- Video production
- Photography
- Livestream production
- Corporate event coverage
- Talent management
- Brand marketing
- Digital advertising
This diversification has helped transform his brand from an individual content creator into a media business serving clients across multiple industries.
Inspiring a New Generation
Obinna's career demonstrates how digital platforms have transformed Kenya's entertainment industry.
By leaving traditional media to build an independent production company, he has inspired many young creators to view YouTube and other digital platforms as viable avenues for entrepreneurship and storytelling.
His success illustrates the changing nature of media, where creators can build audiences and businesses without relying solely on conventional television and radio networks.
