Preserving the Legacy of an Icon: Raila Odinga Family Hands Over Mausoleum Site
The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has officially handed over the site for the construction of a KSh 30 million mausoleum at Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, marking a major step in efforts to preserve his legacy. The project will be undertaken by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026, ahead of the first anniversary of Odinga's death.
The handover ceremony, held on July 20, brought together family members, government officials, and local leaders. Raila Odinga Jr. described the mausoleum as more than a physical structure, saying it would serve as a place where future generations can learn about his father's contribution to Kenya's democracy and political development.
Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga thanked the government for supporting the project, noting that the state was under no obligation to fund the memorial. Government officials assured the family that despite the accelerated timeline, the quality of construction would not be compromised.
According to officials, the mausoleum's design incorporates key elements of Raila Odinga's political journey and is intended to symbolize national unity and Kenya's democratic history. The project is being implemented through the National Museums of Kenya, which had earlier initiated procurement processes for the memorial.
The mausoleum is expected to become a significant historical and cultural landmark, honoring one of Kenya's most influential political figures and preserving his legacy for generations to come.
