Drug Smuggling Ring Exposed as Suspect Swallows 44 Cocaine Pellets, Another Arrested in Mombasa
MOMBASA, Kenya, July 22, 2026 – Anti-narcotics detectives have intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking after arresting a suspected drug courier who allegedly swallowed 44 pellets of cocaine in an attempt to smuggle the narcotics out of the country through Moi International Airport in Mombasa.
According to investigators, the suspect was intercepted while preparing to board a flight to Dubai following an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Anti-Narcotics Police Unit. Authorities placed the suspect under medical observation, where the pellets were later recovered. The cocaine is believed to have a street value running into millions of shillings.
The arrest led detectives to a second suspect believed to be part of the same trafficking network. Police say the individual is suspected of recruiting drug couriers and coordinating narcotics distribution operations within Kenya and beyond.
The case has highlighted the increasingly sophisticated methods being employed by international drug trafficking syndicates operating through Kenya's coastal region. Security agencies have identified Mombasa as a major transit point for narcotics destined for markets in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
Investigators say the operation forms part of a broader campaign targeting drug networks using airports, highways, and seaports to move illicit substances. Recent intelligence-led operations have resulted in multiple arrests and the seizure of cocaine, heroin, cannabis, and other prohibited drugs.
Authorities have vowed to continue pursuing those involved in the illegal trade, warning that more arrests could follow as investigations into the syndicate continue.
The latest arrests underscore the government's ongoing battle against narcotics trafficking, a crime that security agencies say poses a growing threat to public health, security, and the country's international reputation.
