At Least 17 People Have Been Killed in a Multi-Vehicle Crash at Salama, Makueni County, Along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway Early Saturday
The crash involved several vehicles, including a matatu and heavy commercial trucks. Images from the scene show extensive damage to the vehicles, with the matatu suffering severe destruction to its front and side.
Police officers and members of the public were seen at the scene as emergency responders worked to manage the aftermath of the collision. The seriousness of the wreckage has raised concerns over the circumstances that led to the deadly crash.
The Nairobi–Mombasa Highway is one of Kenya's busiest transport corridors, carrying large numbers of passenger vehicles and heavy trucks every day. Accidents along the route can have particularly devastating consequences because of the volume and speed of traffic.
Authorities are expected to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the collision, including how the vehicles involved came into contact and whether factors such as speed, visibility, road conditions or driver behaviour contributed to the tragedy.
The crash has once again highlighted the need for greater caution, responsible driving and strict observance of traffic regulations, particularly on major highways.
Further details, including the identities of those who lost their lives and information on survivors and those injured, are expected as authorities continue with investigations and family notifications.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery.
