The killing of 18-year-old Joy Wangui, a Form Four student from Molo, has shocked residents and renewed calls for justice and stronger action against gender-based violence.

Wangui was found dead at her family home in Moto village, Molo. Police reportedly recovered an axe, panga and knives with suspected bloodstains at the scene. Investigators also found blood writings on a wall, including messages reportedly reading, “Never Cheat,” “I am Sorry Joy” and “I love you.”

Police arrested 23-year-old Walter Kipkoech in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North. Authorities say he was known to Wangui and was reportedly in a romantic relationship with her. He was allegedly wearing clothes bearing Wangui’s name and stained with suspected blood.

Kipkoech appeared before Molo Resident Magistrate Christine Mugo on October 6. The court granted police 21 days to complete investigations, including DNA testing, a post-mortem examination and a mental-health assessment. He remains in custody at Molo Police Station.

He is expected to return to court for plea-taking on October 27, 2026. There has been no final conviction, and the allegations against him remain subject to the judicial process.

The case has sparked grief and anger in Molo, with residents calling for a thorough investigation and justice for Wangui. It has also renewed concern over violence against women and girls in intimate relationships.
