Kenya is mourning the death of veteran diplomat and former Cabinet minister Burudi Nabwera, who died aged 99, bringing to a close a life marked by decades of diplomatic service, political leadership and public service.

Nabwera played a significant role in establishing Kenya's diplomatic presence in the years immediately following independence. He served as the country's first Permanent Representative to the United Nations from December 1963 to September 1970 and also became Kenya's first ambassador to the United States.

Served in Government Under President Moi

Beyond diplomacy, Nabwera held senior positions in Kenya's political establishment. During the administration of former President Daniel arap Moi, he served as Minister of State in the Office of the President and as Secretary-General of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), the ruling party at the time.

His career later extended into elective politics. In 1988, he became the first Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency following its creation. He lost the seat in the 1992 elections and subsequently retired from active electoral politics.

Nabwera also served as chairman of Nzoia Sugar Company, where his experience in leadership and public administration continued to feature in Kenya's institutional development. Former Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo recalled working with him during the preparation of the company's strategic plan in 2008.

Leaders Pay Tribute to Veteran Statesman

News of Nabwera's death prompted tributes from senior political leaders, who recognised his contribution to Kenya's international relations and public service.

Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya described him as a distinguished leader and diplomat who served the country with dedication and honour.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also mourned Nabwera, highlighting his role in helping establish Kenya's voice on the international stage during the early years of independence.

The tributes reflect the significance of Nabwera's career, which spanned diplomacy, government administration, party leadership and parliamentary representation.

A Legacy in Kenya's History

Nabwera belonged to a generation of leaders who took on the responsibility of representing a newly independent Kenya abroad while helping shape its emerging political and administrative institutions.

His diplomatic appointments placed him at the forefront of the country's early engagement with the United States and the United Nations. His later work in government and Parliament extended that public service into national politics and constituency representation.

His death marks the loss of a prominent figure in Kenya's post-independence history. He leaves behind a legacy associated with the early development of the country's diplomatic service and decades of involvement in public affairs.
