Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Party presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i has called on opposition leaders to unite behind a common political strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying cooperation will be crucial in their efforts to challenge President William Ruto.

Matiang’i urged opposition politicians to put aside their differences, coordinate their plans and agree on a candidate who can represent their shared political objectives.

His remarks come as opposition leaders continue consultations over possible alliances and the selection of a presidential candidate to face Ruto, who is seeking a second term.

Matiang’i Pushes for a Common Opposition Candidate

Matiang’i emphasised the importance of opposition leaders working together rather than pursuing separate political ambitions.

He urged his colleagues to agree on an alternative leadership platform, arguing that a coordinated approach would help them present a common challenge to the government.

The former Cabinet Secretary's appeal reflects ongoing discussions within opposition ranks over how to bring together politicians from different parties and political backgrounds.

Several figures have expressed interest in shaping the opposition's presidential campaign, making coalition negotiations and the distribution of political responsibilities important issues ahead of the election.

However, reaching an agreement will require leaders to address differences over who should lead the coalition, which party should provide the presidential candidate and how other aspirants would be accommodated.

Former CS Criticises Ruto’s Administration

Matiang’i also criticised the direction of the country under President Ruto, arguing that Kenya needs alternative leadership.

His remarks form part of the growing political debate over the government's performance and the direction the country should take after the 2027 election.

The government and its supporters have continued to defend their development agenda, while opposition leaders have raised concerns about governance and the economic challenges facing Kenyans.

The competing positions are expected to feature prominently in the campaign as political parties seek to convince voters of their respective policy priorities.

Leaders Accompany Matiang’i

Matiang’i's appearance was accompanied by other political figures, including former Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi.

Their presence highlighted the consultations taking place among politicians seeking to shape the opposition's direction ahead of the next election.

Matiang’i has been positioning himself as a potential presidential contender, and his call for unity places coalition-building at the centre of his political message.

Opposition Faces Challenge of Managing Rival Ambitions

Other prominent opposition figures include Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and several leaders associated with alternative opposition movements.

Although calls for unity have featured in opposition discussions, leaders still have to agree on a common political vehicle and a process for selecting their presidential candidate.

The challenge is to balance the ambitions of individual politicians with the need for cooperation among parties that have different support bases and political priorities.

Matiang’i's latest remarks add to the debate over whether opposition leaders can reach a common position before the August 2027 General Election.
