Kipchoge, 41, wins Melbourne Marathon in a course record
Eliud Kipchoge won the Nike Melbourne Marathon on Sunday in 2:09:10, his first marathon victory since Berlin in September 2023.
The two-time Olympic champion took two seconds off the course record of 2:09:12, set by Kenya's Timothy Kiplagat Ronoh in 2022. This year's course was redesigned to be flatter, with fewer turns. Kipchoge broke away at about 27 km and won by roughly 85 seconds. Australia's Thomas Do Canto was second in 2:10:35 and Reece Edwards third in 2:14:33.
"My body is still peaking," Kipchoge said afterwards, as reported by Athletics Weekly. It is the 17th marathon win of his career. New Zealand's Camille French won the women's race in 2:28:25.
