YVONNE OKWARA QUESTIONS RUTO’S FLOOD OF PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Citizen TV journalist says repeated promises and shifting deadlines are making it difficult for Kenyans to track government projects and hold leaders accountable.
NAIROBI, KENYA — October 12, 2026
Citizen TV journalist Yvonne Okwara has questioned the growing number of development projects and announcements made by President William Ruto, arguing that the constant flow of promises is making it increasingly difficult for Kenyans to monitor implementation and demand accountability.
In her October 9 commentary titled “Death by Announcements,” published by Citizen Digital, Okwara examined several government projects whose timelines have repeatedly changed, raising questions about the gap between presidential announcements and actual delivery.
She cited the proposed Thika Road expressway, the Narok International Airport, the Bomas International Convention Centre and Talanta Sports City as examples of projects that have been accompanied by multiple deadlines and fresh announcements.
Okwara argued that while announcing development plans is a legitimate responsibility of government, excessive announcements can make it difficult for citizens to determine which promises have been fulfilled, which remain under construction and which have fallen behind schedule.
She also questioned the tendency to present public projects as personal achievements of political leaders rather than government commitments funded through public resources.
According to the journalist, public attention should shift from celebrating announcements to examining implementation, costs, timelines and the people expected to benefit.
Her commentary comes amid the Ruto administration’s extensive development programme, which includes affordable housing, roads, markets, hospitals and other infrastructure projects.
Okwara stressed that announcements should mark the beginning of public scrutiny rather than the end of the conversation.
Her central message was that Kenyans need clearer timelines, transparent spending information and regular progress reports to determine whether government promises are translating into tangible results.
