Methu claims Nyoro is a 'mole' and questions Matiang'i's loyalty to united opposition
Nyandarua Senator John Methu has accused Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro of being used by President William Ruto to divide the opposition from within, and cast doubt on the commitment of Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang'i to the united opposition's plan to field one presidential candidate in 2027.
Methu, who is secretary-general of Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), made the claims in an interview on Citizen TV on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Kenyans.co.ke reported.
'Mole' claim
The senator said he had personally been approached with an offer to form a separate party, and said he was surprised when Nyoro launched his own outfit, because Nyoro had earlier told him that another party was a creation of the President.
"If I was to name moles, then I think the name Ndindi Nyoro will feature prominently," Methu said, according to Kenyans.co.ke.
Nyoro left the ruling UDA in August and became leader of the People's Party of Kenya (PPK), a move the Nation said exposed a fault line within the anti-Ruto camp over whether Mt Kenya should rally behind one vehicle, the DCP, or allow several parties to compete.
Doubts over Matiang'i
Methu stopped short of directly accusing Matiang'i, but noted that the former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Nyoro are close friends who often hold rallies together.
"I cannot speak about Matiang'i because I thought I knew him very well. These days, I don't think I know him," he said, according to Kenyans.co.ke.
By contrast, Methu said he trusted Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, citing his support for Gachagua during the 2024 impeachment.
Responses and context
Matiang'i and Nyoro have maintained that they are part of the wider opposition and will support whoever is chosen as its single presidential candidate. In September, the two shared a platform in Kangema, Murang'a, where they called on opposition leaders to set aside differences, The Standard reported.
Methu's remarks follow claims by Gachagua that some principals were threatening to go their own way if they were not picked as flagbearer. Separately, Jubilee deputy leader Jeremiah Kioni has urged his party to reconsider its place in the Kalonzo-led Ukombozi Alliance, saying Jubilee was not getting the respect it deserved.
What next
The opposition has yet to agree on a mechanism for selecting its candidate. The latest exchanges suggest that the question of who carries the flag, and whether all principals will accept the outcome, will remain the coalition's biggest test in the coming months.
