Kenya Power has scheduled planned power interruptions for Tuesday, 13 October 2026, in parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado and Nandi counties. Supply in the affected parts of Nairobi and Kiambu will be off for eight hours, from 9am to 5pm. The utility released the notice on Monday, 12 October.

According to the notice, as reported by several Kenyan outlets, the work covers routine maintenance and upgrades to the network, connecting new customers, and replacing infrastructure in places where roads are being built. Reports say the company cited Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules, which requires it to give customers notice of planned interruptions.

The outage periods differ from county to county. In Kajiado the interruption begins an hour earlier, at 8am, and in Nandi it lasts four hours.

Who is affected

The Nairobi section is the largest. It covers roads in the Ngara and Westlands areas, including stretches of Chiromo Road and Muthithi Road, plus commercial premises such as Paramount Plaza and an ABC Bank location. In Kiambu, the notice lists the Safaricom Data Centre among the sites in the Rumenye area. The notice does not say whether the facility will use backup power.

Around Nkoroi and Matasia in Kajiado County, the outage reaches several access roads, Nazarene University and the Sigma Feeds premises. Customers there face the longest interruption of the day, nine hours. In Nandi, the area around Olessos Technical, together with Timbilil and Cheptuingeny, will be off for four hours from 10am.

Each county's list also includes "adjacent customers", so homes and businesses near the named places may lose power as well. The utility's lists are not always complete, and customers near the boundaries of a listed area should expect that they could be affected.

Advice to customers

Reports of the notice advise households and businesses in the affected areas to plan for the outage. They suggest unplugging sensitive electrical equipment before the power goes off, which protects it from surges when supply returns. Businesses that rely on refrigeration, computers or point-of-sale systems may need to arrange backup power or change their working hours for the day.

A regular schedule of planned outages

Kenya Power publishes planned maintenance notices almost every day. In recent weeks, according to reports by K24 Digital, it has announced interruptions in six to eight counties at a time, some lasting up to nine hours. The utility says these planned shutdowns let engineers work on lines safely and expand capacity as new customers connect.

The company normally restores supply once the work is done. Customers whose power has not come back after the stated end time are usually asked to report it through Kenya Power's official customer care channels.
