ODM party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has been discharged from Nairobi Hospital after about two weeks of treatment.

Oburu was admitted on 4 October and discharged on 19 October, The Star and Capital FM reported. The nature of his illness and his current condition have not been made public.

His last public appearance before the discharge was on 15 October, when he marked his 83rd birthday while still in hospital.

Second hospital stay in two months

This is the senator's second health scare in recent months. In August he was admitted on 22 August and discharged four days later, then readmitted on 26 August after falling ill again. After that episode he said he was recovering at home and that his health had stabilised.

Leading ODM at a delicate time

Oburu, the elder brother of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, took over the leadership of ODM after Raila's death. He leads the party at a difficult moment. It is managing its cooperation with President William Ruto's broad-based government while facing a breakaway challenge from the Linda Mwananchi faction led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

His absence meant he missed several key events. They included the first anniversary memorial of Raila in Bondo and ODM's "Mwezi wa Baba" activities, which have drawn top party officials across the country.

Party officials have not said when he will resume public duties.
