Arsenal draw level with Man City at the top as Villa end perfect run, Spurs stun Chelsea and Isak fires Liverpool
Arsenal moved level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after a weekend in which City's perfect start came to an end at Villa Park, Chelsea were stunned at home by Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool finally celebrated a league win at Anfield under Andoni Iraola.
The Matchweek 8 results reshaped the early-season table and gave Kenyan fans of England's biggest clubs plenty to talk about, coming on the same weekend that Bournemouth thrashed Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.
Villa end City's perfect run
Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday, with Nicolas Jackson scoring twice for Unai Emery's side. Jackson pounced on an error by Marc Guehi to put Villa ahead after just six minutes, AFP reported via France 24.
Erling Haaland headed City level early in the second half, his 13th goal in 10 games this season, but Jackson restored Villa's lead around the hour mark. Villa have now beaten City at Villa Park for the fourth consecutive season.
City manager Enzo Maresca was blunt in his assessment. "We lost because we probably are not being clinical enough in their box," he said.
Set pieces carry Arsenal
Arsenal took full advantage, beating Everton 2-0 at the Emirates to draw level with City on 21 points from eight games. Ezri Konsa opened the scoring in the seventh minute from a corner Everton failed to clear, his first goal for the club, before Gabriel Magalhaes doubled the lead midway through the second half.
"We had some problems to finish the actions but we scored from a set-piece," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said, according to AFP.
Palmer sees red as Spurs win at the Bridge
At Stamford Bridge, Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 to hand Xabi Alonso his first home defeat as Chelsea manager. The breakthrough came in the 77th minute when goalkeeper Mike Penders turned a Spurs corner into his own net under pressure, Sky Sports and ESPN reported.
Chelsea's afternoon worsened three minutes later when Cole Palmer, already booked, was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Conor Gallagher. Mathys Tel sealed the win in the 87th minute, dribbling from inside his own half before finding the bottom corner. The win lifted Spurs out of the relegation zone.
Isak keeps Liverpool rolling
On Sunday, Liverpool beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield for their first Premier League home win under Iraola and a fourth straight victory in all competitions. Florian Wirtz's shot was diverted into his own net by Pascal Gross in the 17th minute, and Alexander Isak doubled the lead four minutes later from a Bradley Barcola cut-back.
Isak now has six league goals this season and has scored in three consecutive league games. The result moved Liverpool up to fourth, one point behind Brighton, despite the visitors enjoying 64 per cent of possession, Sky Sports reported.
"Very happy. We needed this win at home and to celebrate with the supporters," Iraola said. Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler lamented: "We made two easy mistakes to give them a present to score two goals."
Wirtz was substituted after 64 minutes with an ankle knock, though the German playmaker played down the injury, saying: "I think it will be alright, it's not too bad."
Elsewhere
Fulham climbed out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win at Coventry City courtesy of an Oscar Bobb goal, while Newcastle United won 2-0 at Crystal Palace. Sunderland and Leeds United played out a goalless draw, and Hull City drew 1-1 with Brentford.
