FKF Premier League leaders Gor Mahia put their perfect start on the line on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, with coach Charles Akonnor signalling that he will rotate his squad.

K'Ogalo have won all three of their opening matches, against Murang'a Seal, APS Bomet and Bandari, and sit at the top of the table with nine points. Homeboyz have four points from two games after beating promoted Mombasa United 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with Ulinzi Stars. Their scheduled meeting with Tusker was postponed because of the brewers' continental commitments.

Kick-off is at 2pm.

Akonnor turns to his bench

The Ghanaian tactician said some of his players had already played heavy minutes and he wanted to give others a chance. He told Citizen Digital that there could be "one or two changes" to the line-up.

"We believe in each and every person in the squad," Akonnor said, adding that his team understood what to do in difficult situations and that this belief had carried them through their first three matches.

He also warned his players against complacency, telling The Star that earlier results would count for nothing once the whistle blew and describing Homeboyz as "a good side, especially at home".

Captain Sylvester Owino said the team had improved both in front of goal and at the back. "Homeboyz away is a tough fixture, but we have prepared adequately," he said, promising that the squad would push to bring home maximum points.

Manoah: we are not afraid

Homeboyz coach Edward Manoah, who joined from Sofapaka ahead of the season, urged his players to stay switched on for the full 90 minutes, warning that Gor Mahia punish mistakes.

"We respect them, but we are not afraid of them," Manoah said. He said his side could not sit back for the entire match and hope to win, and would need to compete for second balls in midfield and take their chances.

Recent history favours the visitors. Gor Mahia won the last two league meetings between the sides by a single goal, including a 1-0 win in May decided by a stoppage-time own goal, while the January 2025 encounter ended goalless.

Rest of the midweek fixtures

Wednesday's Match Week Four programme has six games:

  • Kakamega Homeboyz vs Gor Mahia, Bukhungu Stadium, 2pm
  • Murang'a Seal vs Nairobi United, SportPesa Arena, 3pm
  • Mara Sugar vs AFC Leopards, William Ole Ntimama Stadium, Narok, 4.15pm
  • APS Bomet vs 3K FC, Raila Odinga Stadium, Homa Bay
  • Bandari vs Posta Rangers, Mbaraki Sports Club, Mombasa
  • KCB vs Mombasa United, Police Sacco Stadium

AFC Leopards and Mara Sugar both go into their meeting in Narok with five points from three matches. Leopards were held to a goalless draw by Shabana at the weekend after Shabana goalkeeper Ndzila saved a penalty.

Bandari and APS Bomet are both still looking for their first win of the season, while Posta Rangers arrive at the coast buoyed by a late 1-0 win over KCB last Friday.
