From bottom-up to grave
Is It “From Bottom to the Grave”?
This question is being asked by many teachers regarding the government’s commitment to the benefits they are entitled to, especially those that are provided after death.
To ease the immediate financial burden when a teacher passes away, the government has introduced swift funeral assistance measures as follows:
- KSh 300,000 Last Expense Cover: Under the Social Health Authority (SHA) medical scheme, which is implemented by the Ministry of Health, registered teachers are entitled to a funeral benefit of KSh 300,000 upon death.
- Rapid Payout: In partnership with insurance administrators, the system is designed to ensure that these funds are released to the designated next of kin within 48 to 72 hours after claim verification. This is intended to support families in giving the deceased a dignified send-off.
Presidential Statement
In his address, His Excellency William Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers as follows:
I stand before you to report on the government’s initiative aimed at strengthening the welfare of teachers in Kenya.
The government recognizes that teachers play a central role in shaping the nation’s future. In this regard, measures have been put in place to ensure that their dignity is upheld both in life and in death.
Through the Social Health Authority, an Immediate Burial Support Program has been established to ease the financial burden faced by families upon the death of a teacher.
Under this arrangement, every registered teacher is entitled to a Last Expense Cover of KSh 300,000. This support is intended to help families organize a dignified funeral without financial strain.
In addition, the system has been streamlined to ensure efficiency. Once a claim is verified, payment is processed and released within 48 to 72 hours to the designated next of kin.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding teachers and ensuring that their service to the nation is honored even after death.
In conclusion, this program strengthens social protection for educators and reaffirms the government’s commitment to the welfare of all teachers in Kenya.
