The recent absence of veteran ODM leader Oburu Oginga from several high-profile party events has fueled speculation about both his health and his political future within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Over the past few weeks, Oburu has skipped a string of major ODM functions, prompting growing public curiosity and internal discussions within the party. Despite his physical absence, however, he has continued to communicate with party members through written statements emphasizing unity, transparency, and cohesion.

Series of Missed ODM Events

Questions about Oburu’s whereabouts intensified after he failed to attend the ODM leaders’ retreat held in Mombasa on May 4, 2026. In his place, he sent a written apology citing “unforeseen circumstances.”

His absence came just days after he also missed the ODM Youth Congress in Kilifi on April 26, as well as the opening ceremony of the Raila Odinga Hospital on April 27, where ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga represented him.

Oburu’s last confirmed public appearance was on April 20 during the ODM Youth League Convention in Nairobi.

Health Speculation and Party Response

The repeated no-shows quickly sparked speculation about his health, with political observers and ODM supporters questioning whether the veteran politician was facing serious medical challenges.

Addressing the rumors, ODM Minority Leader Junet Mohammed stated that Oburu had been recovering from a brief illness but was “in good health.”

Report by NTV further indicated that although absent from public events, Oburu remains actively involved in ODM affairs through written communication and strategic guidance to party members.

Calls for Unity and Transparent Leadership

In his recent messages to ODM members, Oburu has consistently urged leaders to place party unity above personal ambition.

He emphasized the importance of transparent and credible party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that flawed nominations could deepen divisions within ODM. He also cautioned party leaders against rushing into coalition agreements with UDA without broad internal consultations.

According to his statements, ODM’s long-term stability and cohesion should remain the party’s top priority during a politically sensitive transition period.

Growing Questions Over ODM’s Future

Oburu’s absence comes at a critical moment for ODM as discussions intensify over succession planning and the party’s direction in the post-Raila Odinga era.

With figures such as Edwin Sifuna openly expressing presidential ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election, political analysts say the visibility and influence of senior ODM figures like Oburu remain essential to maintaining party unity.

As speculation continues, the recurring question — “Where is Oburu?” — has evolved beyond personal concern into a broader symbol of uncertainty surrounding ODM’s leadership transition and future political strategy.
