Public Outrage After Student Allegedly Thrown from Moving Matatu on Thika Road
A final-year medical student lost his life on Friday morning after he was allegedly pushed out of a moving public service vehicle and subsequently run over along Thika Road.
The tragic occurrence has generated widespread anger and reignited debate about passenger safety within the public transport industry.
The victim, identified as Eugene Mutuku, was reportedly undertaking a hospital attachment in Kasarani and was on his way to work when the incident took place.
Police officers based in Kasarani confirmed the occurrence and stated that the vehicle in question has been detained as investigations continue.
A motorist who was travelling behind the matatu and stopped to offer assistance said he witnessed the student being forced out of the vehicle before it ran over him.
Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased had become involved in a dispute over fare change, though authorities had not officially verified the exact circumstances that led to his fall from the vehicle by Friday evening.
The incident has attracted condemnation from leaders and members of the public, many of whom have questioned how such an event could happen aboard a vehicle carrying numerous passengers.
Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina described the tragedy as evidence of a society experiencing a decline in moral values.
"We have become a deeply morally compromised society," she said.
"If a student can be pushed out of a moving PSV, in the presence of people around him, because he lacked Sh20, then may God have mercy on us."
Mutuku's death adds to a growing list of cases involving passengers who have either fallen from or allegedly been ejected from moving public service vehicles, raising fresh concerns about safety standards within the matatu sector.
Earlier this year in February, Joseph Mureithi died after he was reportedly thrown from a moving matatu along the Nairobi-Namanga Highway in Athi River. Witnesses alleged that members of the crew pushed him out following a disagreement before the same vehicle ran over him. Police later arrested both the driver and conductor as inquiries began.
In March 2025, another case drew public attention when Gilbert Kimani reportedly lost his life after being ejected from a moving matatu on Thika Road during a dispute involving a Sh30 fare balance.
According to witnesses, he fell onto the road and was then run over by the vehicle.
The judiciary has also handled similar incidents.
This week, the High Court sentenced a matatu driver and conductor to ten years' imprisonment each over the 2018 death of college student Doreen Kinya, who sustained fatal injuries after falling from a speeding matatu along Thika Road.
The court concluded that the crew had shown extreme negligence and disregard for the safety of passengers.
In a separate matter, a Nairobi matatu tout was arraigned in court in 2020 after allegedly pushing a passenger out of a moving bus following a disagreement over fare reimbursement, resulting in severe injuries to the victim.
