Siaya Residents Demand More Public Education as KenGen Seeks Views on Nuclear Energy Project
SIAYA, Kenya, July 22, 2026 – Residents of Siaya County have called for extensive public education and awareness campaigns before the implementation of any nuclear energy-related project in the region.
The concerns emerged during a public participation forum organized by KenGen, which sought to collect views from local residents and stakeholders regarding proposed nuclear energy developments. The meeting was attended by Bondo MP Dr. Gideon Ochanda, community leaders, and members of the public.
While many participants acknowledged the potential economic and energy benefits associated with nuclear power, they expressed concerns about safety, environmental impact, and the long-term effects of such projects.
Residents urged KenGen and relevant government agencies to prioritize civic education and technical training to ensure communities fully understand the opportunities and risks associated with nuclear technology before any major decisions are made.
Dr. Ochanda emphasized the importance of transparency and meaningful public engagement, noting that community concerns must be adequately addressed throughout the consultation process.
