The newly rebranded Ukombozi Alliance is facing an early political test as disagreements emerge among opposition leaders over the direction and leadership of the new coalition.

The alliance emerged from the rebranding of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party as opposition parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. However, The Standard reports that divergent views among some leaders have complicated the launch of the new political vehicle.

The coalition’s formation is taking place against a background of attempts by opposition parties to create a broader platform capable of bringing together different political interests.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been central to the discussions surrounding the new alliance. At the same time, reports indicate that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been proposed to succeed former President Uhuru Kenyatta in the alliance’s chairmanship. Siaya Governor James Orengo has also been mentioned in discussions over the alliance’s leadership structure.

The emerging disagreements demonstrate the difficulty of maintaining a coalition involving parties and politicians with different political ambitions.

One of the major questions facing the alliance is how it will eventually select its presidential candidate. Reports indicate that the coalition’s council is expected to discuss the question of its presidential flagbearer.

The debate is significant because Kenyan political coalitions have historically been affected by disagreements over leadership, candidate selection, and the distribution of political positions.

For Ukombozi, the immediate challenge is therefore to transform the coalition from an agreement between political parties into an organisation with a clear structure, common programme, and agreed decision-making mechanisms.

The coming months are likely to reveal whether the alliance can maintain unity while accommodating the ambitions of its constituent parties
