Bishop Margaret Wanjiru Endorses Fred Matiang’i for Presidency as She Eyes Nairobi Governor Seat
Bishop Margaret Wanjiru of Jesus Is Alive Ministries has endorsed Jubilee Party presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i ahead of the 2027 General Election, as she pursues her own political ambitions in Nairobi.
The endorsement came during a Sunday church service attended by Matiang’i and other political leaders, including Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi, Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo, former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and former Borabu MP Ben Momanyi.
Matiang’i Condemns Political Disruptions
Speaking during the service, Matiang’i criticised the disruption of public meetings and places of worship, saying Kenyans should be free to participate in gatherings without intimidation.
He called for discipline, respect for the law and effective leadership, accusing some political leaders of being behind incidents involving groups that disrupt meetings. These allegations were made by Matiang’i and were not independently established in the report.
“The church must be respected,” Matiang’i said, adding that the country needed leadership that upheld the law and protected citizens’ freedoms.
Calls for Opposition Unity
Matiang’i also urged opposition leaders to unite behind a common political agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said cooperation among opposition figures would be necessary to bring about the political changes they are advocating for, while calling on Wanjiru to continue working with him and other leaders.
His remarks come as opposition politicians continue discussions over whether to settle on a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
Wanjiru Eyes Nairobi Governorship
Wanjiru, a former Starehe MP and founder of Jesus Is Alive Ministries, has declared her intention to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027 through the Kenya Moja Movement Party.
She has previously spoken about restoring order and dignity in the capital, making governance and leadership central themes of her campaign.
The endorsement adds a new dimension to the political engagement between Wanjiru and Matiang’i as both prepare for the next election cycle.
