Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has declared that he will run for governor of the capital in the 2027 General Election, adding his name to a growing list of aspirants eyeing City Hall.

Mosiria, who heads Citizen Engagement and Customer Service in the county government, made the announcement on Sunday, October 11, during a service at Jesus Is Alive Ministries in Nairobi, the church led by Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, which was hosting a delegation of Jubilee Party leaders.

"Mr Fix-it"

Branding himself "Mr Fix-it", the chief officer promised to transform the city if elected. "If you want change in Nairobi, Mosiria is the change," he said, according to Citizen Digital.

He pointed to his record in three county departments as preparation for the top job. He served as Chief Officer for Health Facilities before moving to the environment docket in August 2024, where he became known for publicised crackdowns on dumping and filth, often shared on social media. Governor Johnson Sakaja moved him to his current role in a circular dated November 18, 2025.

Mosiria said Nairobi was "too serious to be left in the hands of cartels" and pledged to complete unfulfilled promises in the manifestos of former governors Evans Kidero and Mike Sonko. He also urged fellow aspirants to sell their agendas rather than rely on violence, telling them not to work with goons, The Star reported.

Wanjiru floated as running mate

In a light-hearted moment, Mosiria suggested that Bishop Wanjiru, a former Starehe MP, could serve as his deputy, although no agreement was announced. Wanjiru has herself declared an interest in the governor's seat.

The chief officer also praised Jubilee leader and presidential aspirant Fred Matiang'i, describing him as "a leader chosen by God" and comparing his own plans to Matiang'i's record in the education and interior ministries. A day earlier, Mosiria had shared a photo with Matiang'i, fuelling speculation that he is seeking the former CS's backing. He has also said his decision followed consultations with former governor Sonko.

Challenging his boss

The bid pits Mosiria directly against Governor Sakaja, who is expected to seek a second term. Mosiria has not yet said which party ticket he will use.

Other politicians who have shown interest in the seat include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri and businesswoman Agnes Kagure.

What it means

Mosiria's declaration raises questions about his position in Sakaja's administration as the 2027 race heats up. The Public Service Commission rules require public officers seeking elective office to resign within the period set by electoral law before the polls.
