Haitian-Congolese artist Paska and Kenyan singer-songwriter Njerae have released the official music video for "No More Drama", their cross-continental collaboration that mixes Haitian Konpa with East African R&B.

The song

The single came out on September 25. Konpa, the danceable Haitian style built on a steady, swaying rhythm, gives the song its beat, while Njerae's soft vocals give it an intimate R&B feel. According to K24, the lyrics move between Haitian Creole, Lingala and Swahili.

The song is about leaving heartbreak behind and finding a love that brings peace instead of pain.

The video

The video was unveiled at a viewing party attended by music lovers, creatives and industry figures, before going online. It was directed by French-Haitian visual artist Christo, who went for natural chemistry rather than staged performance.

"It felt very natural," Paska said of the shoot. "I brought my Haitian and Congolese influences, she brought her Kenyan perspective, and somehow the two worlds just fit."

He said Njerae, who he describes as usually introverted, was willing to try a more cinematic style: "Njerae brought a really effortless energy." Njerae has described working with Paska as seamless.

Who they are

Paska draws on both his Haitian and Congolese roots and says he wants to connect his Haitian heritage with audiences across Africa. He previously worked with the Kenyan collective KodongKlan on "Your Body".

Njerae is one of the leading voices in Kenya's new wave of R&B. She recently performed at Capital FM's 30th-anniversary concert and released "Colors" with Bensoul last year.

"No More Drama" shows how African and Caribbean sounds keep finding each other, and gives Kenyan listeners a rare taste of Konpa sung partly in Swahili.
