Bien becomes the first African artist signed to Quality Control, the US label behind Migos and Lil Baby
Kenyan singer Bien-Aimé Baraza, known to fans simply as Bien, has signed with Quality Control, the Atlanta label that built the careers of Migos, Lil Baby and City Girls. Reports describe him as the first African artist on the label's roster.
The deal
According to US music trade publication Hits Daily Double, the signing runs through a joint venture between Quality Control and Courtesy Of, and marks the label's first move into Africa. The partnership was announced on October 9. Quality Control CEO Pierre "P" Thomas said the focus is on how far the label can expand Bien's reach around the world.
Bien's wife and manager has said the deal took close to a year to put together.
The first single
The first release under the deal is "I'll Be Okay", which came out this week with an official music video. The song is about getting over heartbreak and moving forward after a break-up. It was written by Bien with Wuodomollo and Cleo Mukula, and produced by Remy Baggins and Michael Bangerz.
The single is a first taste of Bien's next solo album, Alusa Continua, expected on November 20. It follows his 2023 solo debut, Alusa Why Are You Topless?
Why it matters for East Africa
Bien rose to fame as one of the four members of Sauti Sol, the Kenyan group whose hits made them one of Africa's best-known bands before they went on a break in 2023 to pursue solo projects. Since then, Bien has built a strong solo career at home.
A deal with a major American hip-hop label gives him access to US marketing, distribution and collaborations that few East African artists have had. While Nigerian and South African stars have dominated Africa's global music push, Bien's signing is being seen as a sign that the US industry is starting to look east as well.
For Kenyan fans, the question now is how much of the Sauti Sol sound survives the move, and whether Alusa Continua can take Kenyan pop to new audiences.
