The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned residents of 21 counties to prepare for rain, and says strong winds are expected over parts of northern Kenya.

The forecast, released at 3pm on Tuesday, covers the period from 9pm on 20 October to 9pm on 21 October 2026, K24 Digital reported.

Where to expect rain

Rain is expected in Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Bomet, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Homa Bay, Busia, Nakuru, Embu, Narok, Meru, Nyeri and Nyandarua.

Many areas will have partly cloudy skies and sunny intervals in the morning, with showers and thunderstorms possible in the afternoon.

Strong winds in the north

KMD said strong southerly to south-easterly winds of more than 25 knots, about 12.5 metres per second, are expected over parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties. Maximum temperatures in Turkana could reach about 38°C.

Short rains season

The forecast comes as the October–December short rains season gets under way. KMD recently announced the onset of rainfall in several regions and warned of strong winds, The Standard reported. Nairobi authorities have opened the Nairobi Dam spillway as part of El Niño preparedness.

Safety advice

Residents are advised to:

- Avoid sheltering under trees or near metal structures during thunderstorms.
- Not walk or drive through flooded roads or rivers.
- Watch for landslides in hilly areas such as the Kerio Valley, Mt Elgon and the central highlands.
- Secure loose roofing and outdoor items where strong winds are expected.

Fishermen on Lake Turkana and people travelling in northern Kenya should take extra care because of the wind warning.
