Everton reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Thursday night with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United at Hill Dickinson Stadium. They did it without Jack Grealish, whom the club had left out over what manager David Moyes called "a breach of club discipline".

Everton will now travel to League Two side Fleetwood Town, who knocked out Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties on Tuesday. Earlier on Thursday, the Football Association rejected Arsenal's appeal against the red card shown to 16-year-old Max Dowman in that match.

Toffees in control

James Garner put Everton ahead in the 34th minute, and Hayden Hackney doubled the lead just before half-time with his first goal since his summer move from Middlesbrough. Thierno Barry scored his seventh goal of the season in the 69th minute, finishing a cross from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Dan Burn headed in a late consolation for Newcastle, and tempers flared afterwards. Everton captain James Tarkowski pushed Joelinton to the ground, and both players were booked along with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, according to BBC Sport. The two sides meet again in the Premier League on Monday.

Silence on Grealish

Moyes would not say what Grealish had done. "You probably know I'm not going to give any details," he said after the game. "It's a club decision, it's something I don't want to speak too much about." BBC Sport and Sky Sports reported that the decision is understood to relate to an unauthorised absence from training.

Grealish, 31, is on a season-long loan from Manchester City. He has played five Premier League games for Everton this season. Moyes said he backed the decision but would not say whether the winger will be available for Monday's league match at Newcastle.

Dowman to miss Liverpool trip

At Fleetwood, Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute for kicking out at Harrison Neal after a heavy challenge. An independent commission dismissed Arsenal's claims of wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment, the FA said. The teenager now serves a three-match ban for violent conduct, starting with Sunday's Premier League game at Liverpool.

It was his second red card this month, after a sending-off while playing for England's Under-19s. Arsenal are already short of wingers, with Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Christos Tzolis all injured.
