The race to join Kenya’s highest court has entered its final stretch. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has officially shortlisted five candidates to fill the vacant position of Supreme Court Judge, with Court of Appeal Judge Katwa Kigen emerging as a prominent name on the list.

Justice Kigen, well-known for his previous role as a legal representative for President William Ruto before joining the bench, will face the interviewing panel alongside four other finalists.

The Interview Schedule

The JSC has cleared two days for the high-stakes public interviews:

  • Tuesday, April 28, 2026

  • Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Why This Matters

The Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter of constitutional disputes and presidential election petitions. This recruitment is a critical move in shaping the future of the judiciary, as the successful candidate will join the seven-member bench responsible for the country’s most significant legal precedents.

The upcoming sessions are expected to be rigorous, focusing on the candidates' judicial records, integrity, and their commitment to upholding the independence of the courts.
