Big news for Nyamira County! President William Ruto has officially confirmed that the region won’t just be a "transit point" for the SGR—it’s getting its own major hub.

Here’s the breakdown of the KSh 300 Million Ikonge SGR Station announcement and what it means for the region:

Putting Nyamira on the Map

When the new Naivasha-to-Kisumu SGR route was first mapped out earlier this year, there was a lot of local anxiety that Nyamira would be skipped. This announcement clears the air. The President has committed KSh 300 million to build a modern station right in Ikonge, North Mugirango.

More Than Just a Passenger Stop

This isn’t just about catching a train to Nairobi. The Ikonge station is being designed as a dual-purpose facility:

For Farmers: It will serve as a freight hub, allowing local tea and agricultural produce to be transported to markets faster and cheaper.

For Travelers: It provides a direct, high-speed link for residents traveling toward Nairobi or Kisumu.

The Bigger Picture

This station is a key piece of the Phase 2B SGR extension, a massive project aimed at linking the hinterland to the Kisumu Port. By placing a station in Ikonge, the government is betting on the Gusii region’s economic potential to help fuel the "Bottom-Up" agenda.

The "Gusii Tour" Momentum

The station wasn't the only win for the area during the President's three-day visit. We also saw:

A KSh 1 billion commitment to upgrade Nyamira County Hospital.

The launch of the Ikonge Modern Market.

Progress updates on the Eronge-Chepilat road to improve local connectivity.

The Bottom Line: For years, residents in this region have watched major infrastructure projects pass them by. With the Ikonge SGR station, Nyamira is officially being plugged into the national grid of trade and travel.

What do you think, Will this station be a game-changer for local businesses, or is the focus on the SGR moving too fast? Let me know in the comments!
