Back to Elections?
The Maseno University Students from Western Province Association (MUSWEPA) has nullified the recently conducted chairperson election following complaints and reported irregularities during the voting process.
In a notice from the office of the commission chair, Rashid Wanyama confirmed that an appeal was filed by Hosea Mudenyo and Oscar Wasike challenging the credibility of the election and expressing lack of confidence in the commission.
Reports from the venue owner and Maseno Police also indicated that property was damaged during the exercise. A window glass was allegedly broken by a participant identified as Faith Joy from Bungoma, while individuals believed to have been hired by Ezra Barasa reportedly damaged a door, forcing it open during the incident.
The commission stated that the election rules were violated through destruction of property, threats to members, use of force, and alleged rigging, particularly in the chairperson race. Citing Article 13.3 of the MUSWEPA constitution, the commission declared the chairperson election null and void.
A fresh election will be conducted, and only the first and second chairperson aspirants will be allowed to contest. The date and venue of the repeat election will be communicated before the end of the week.
