Tragedy Strikes as Vihiga Youth Dies in Kakamega Gold Mine
A cloud of grief has engulfed Mapera Village in Muhudu Ward, Hamisi Sub-county, Vihiga County, following the tragic death of a young man identified as Davis, popularly known as Ivan.
According to reports from fellow miners and residents, Ivan lost his life on Thursday, June 4, 2026, while working at a gold mining site in Lirembe, Kakamega County. It is alleged that the young man collapsed inside a mining pit after experiencing suffocation, a common danger associated with underground mining activities. Mining accidents and pit collapses have previously been reported in parts of Kakamega and the wider western Kenya gold belt.
The incident has sent shockwaves through his family, friends, and the wider community, many of whom described him as hardworking, ambitious, and determined to improve his life through mining. News of his sudden demise spread quickly across social media and local networks, attracting messages of condolence from those who knew him.
Artisanal gold mining remains a major source of livelihood for many youths in western Kenya. However, the sector continues to face numerous safety challenges, including poor ventilation in mining shafts, pit collapses, and exposure to hazardous conditions. Several fatal mining incidents have been reported in the region over the years, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.
As family members make arrangements to receive the body and prepare for burial, residents of Mapera Village have expressed their sorrow over the loss of a young life cut short under such tragic circumstances.
The death of Ivan serves as a painful reminder of the risks many young people undertake daily in search of a livelihood.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his family and friends find strength and comfort during this difficult period.
