Rice Farming Expansion in Karachuonyo Set to Boost Food Security and Incomes
A major agricultural transformation is underway in Karachuonyo Constituency following the successful launch of the first commercial rice harvest at Ondago Swamp, a project that is expected to significantly boost food production, create jobs, and improve livelihoods across the region. The initiative is being spearheaded by the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) under the Kimira-Oluch Irrigation Scheme.
The project has already recorded a major milestone, with more than 200 acres of rice ready for harvesting just months after cultivation began. According to LBDA, over 5,000 acres have been placed under production within the broader irrigation scheme, with plans to expand cultivation to more than 20,000 acres once rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure is completed.
Speaking during the harvest launch, LBDA Managing Director Wycliffe Ochiaga said the project demonstrates the vast agricultural potential of the Kimira-Oluch Irrigation Scheme and could help reduce Kenya's reliance on imported rice. He noted that the scheme is expected to produce substantial yields while strengthening national food security.
For many residents, the project marks a historic turning point. Ondago Swamp, which had remained largely idle for decades, is now being transformed into productive farmland. Local farmers who previously derived little economic value from the swamp are now embracing rice cultivation as a new source of income and employment.
Beyond food production, the initiative has created employment opportunities for youth, women, and local communities. The rice value chain is also generating business opportunities in harvesting, transportation, processing, packaging, and marketing. Harvested rice is processed through a milling plant in Kisumu, enhancing value addition and market access for farmers.
The project is the result of collaboration between the national government, Homa Bay County Government, and private sector partners. Stakeholders have pledged continued support through farm inputs, mechanization, extension services, and improved market linkages to ensure long-term success.
Despite the promising outlook, challenges such as inadequate water supply, crop damage by birds, and limited access to financing remain. However, authorities say efforts are underway to rehabilitate critical irrigation infrastructure and provide farmers with the necessary support to maximize production.
Agriculture experts believe the expansion of rice farming in Karachuonyo could position the area as one of western Kenya's leading rice-producing zones while contributing to food security, poverty reduction, and economic growth in Homa Bay County and beyond.
