Kenya tightens Ebola screening for travellers from 10 countries
Travellers arriving in Kenya from ten countries now face stricter Ebola checks, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced, as the government works to stop further cases after the country's first imported infection.
Which countries
The enhanced screening applies to travellers from:
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Uganda
- Tanzania
- Rwanda
- Burundi
- Angola
- Zambia
- Ethiopia
- South Sudan
- Central African Republic
What changes
At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), flights from these countries are directed to Gate 16 for health screening. Passengers are checked for signs of illness and must fill in health declaration forms before entering the country. Checks have also been stepped up at land border crossings.
Speaking at Nairobi Hospital, Duale said the ministry "will continue to update the public on measures that the government is putting in place to mitigate the spread of the disease". He urged Kenyans to "remain calm and vigilant, practise strict hand hygiene".
Treatment and isolation
According to The Star, the government has prepared treatment beds at Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the National Police Hospital, Port Reitz Hospital and Nairobi Hospital. Temporary isolation centres for suspected cases have been set up at Malaba Health Centre, the Busia border and Kocholia, and Alupe Sub-District Hospital in Busia County is being renovated for Ebola care.
The National Treasury has released an initial KES 2.6 billion for Ebola preparedness and containment.
How we got here
The first confirmed patient entered Kenya from the DRC on October 3, was admitted to Nairobi Hospital and died two days later. The Ministry of Health and the Kenya Red Cross carried out a safe burial.
What you should do

- Avoid contact with anyone showing symptoms.
- Report suspected cases or possible exposure by calling the toll-free line 719.
